Eleven Osceola Schools Awarded The Healthier US School Challenge Smarter Lunchroom Award
The United States Department of Agriculture has awarded the following 11 Osceola schools with the Healthier US School Challenge Smarter Lunchroom Award, as part of a voluntary national certification program that recognizes healthier school environments through the promotion of nutrition and physical activity:
Central Avenue Elementary, Highlands Elementary, Michigan Avenue Elementary, Neptune Middle, Parkway Middle, Partin Settlement Elementary, Pleasant Hill Elementary, St. Cloud Elementary, and Thacker Avenue Elementary
Bronze Level: Narcoossee Elementary
The US School Challenge is designed to bring schools closer to compliance with Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) recommendations for healthier school meals and physical activity in schools. The recognition includes visits in district by USDA representative(s), and a plaque, banner, and monetary incentives awarded to each school. The Osceola School District has only won this award once before in 2008-2010 when Central Avenue Elementary, Thacker Avenue Elementary, Sunrise Elementary, and Reedy Creek Elementary won Silver Awards.
